Freshwater ecosystemsโlakes, rivers, ponds, and wetlandsโcover less than 1% of Earth's surface but are home to over 10% of all known species. They provide drinking water, irrigation, and habitats for countless organisms.
Lentic Systems
Still or slow-moving water: lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. Stratified into zones based on light and temperature.
Lotic Systems
Flowing water: rivers, streams, and creeks. High oxygen levels from constant water movement.
Wetlands
Marshes, swamps, and bogs. Nature's kidneysโfiltering pollutants and preventing floods.
Marine Ecosystems
Oceans, coral reefs, and estuaries. Cover 71% of Earth and produce over 50% of our oxygen.

Some species have a disproportionately large impact on their ecosystem. For example:

Temperature
